Trust the Process Podcast

Season 2

Episode 3: Wayne Bergeron Tells the Hard Truth of Being an Injured Freelance Musician

You've heard him on movies such as The Incredibles, West Side Story (2021), and countless others.

You've heard him as the lead trumpet player in Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.

Today, trumpet legend Wayne Bergeron joins me on Trust the Process to share his story overcoming cancer, a cyst in his lip, and a dental nerve injury that took over a year to return from.

Not only that, he tells all in how difficult it is to take time off for injury recovery as a freelance musician in the competitive Los Angeles music scene.

But he and I both agree -- if you want longevity in your career, you need to prioritize the rest you need to come back healthfully.

He also shares why young trumpet players seem to keep getting hurt, and how proper equipment and pedagogy can prevent a lot of cases of injury.

But the best part is how he was able to come back to playing through the support of true friends and a community that lifted him up.

How he was able to help others going through cancer through support groups.

And ultimately, how he overcame his injuries and setbacks to be playing better now than he ever has in his life!

Keep on keepin' on, and trust the process!
